I am writing this post on this circumstances: I haven’t completed my holiday homework when school is starting in two week’s time and I will be unable to complete in time because of particular reasons.
Now I move on to why I write this post. Holiday homework is the most annoying thing ever. Every holiday, the teachers just have to give us this gift–tons of homework to complete before school reopens. In their opinion, holidays cannot go to waste without making students learn a bit of the syllabus yes. Especially Math teachers..Not a holiday has gone by without a self-learning topic from them. It’s extremely annoying and impedes our learning. Holidays I meant to be rest, a break for students to enjoy before another stressful academic year. Yet, with homework, it seems like holidays are not holidays but instead just two months of Home-learning Day. Recently, the government has been making so many redundant changes to the school system in their vane efforts to spread the ideology that “Every School Is A Good School” to discourage parents who would do everything to ensure that their child gets into the most prestigious school. All a waste of time and effort I would say. They could spend their resources on ensuring that students who are already in secondary schools have better lives such as less homework and more rest.
Why do I think holiday homework is the most hateful thing on Earth? Firstly, assigning homework right after examinations ended is a really cruel thing to do. Do you think we are study machines who spend all our lives doing homework? Do you not think that we need a break from homework? Can’t you just spare us for two months? They say rest is for us to walk further and I am sure two months of homework-free holidays would do more good than harm!
Secondly, much more time can be spent on more useful things other than homework during the holidays! No matter what “unproductive” things we do during the holidays, they are all different learning experiences we can gain outside of homework! For e.g going overseas–we can gain wider knowledge of the world around us. This would be much more useful than say reading a book about that country and writing a book review about it.
Thirdly, do you think the homework students complete during the holidays would be up to standards? I am quite sure the answer will be no. Why? Which student will be willing to sacrifice time and effort to complete their homework to the best of their abilities during the holiday? Yes, we will complete it because we are forced to. But whether it is with our best efforts is another matter altogether. If learning is something we should enjoy doing, then shouldn’t we enjoy completing the homework we are given?
Perhaps schools can ensure more flexibility in holiday assignments such that students can complete them in their own way. For example, students can choose something interesting they have experience during the holidays to share with their classmates. With such an assignment, the other students can gain a lot of additional knowledge outside of the classroom and the benefits here will definitely be far more than that of submitting another Math worksheet. In all honesty though, how much of what we have learnt in the classroom today would be put to use in the future? If education is to prepare us for the future, than shouldn’t education extend beyond homework?
